A Clearpoint salesperson is trying to sell me a 16mbyte memory board for my VS2000(s). Anyone with any experience with one of these beasts? I'm skeptical since the documentation for the VS2000 seems to say the max is 14 Mbytes (2 Megs on the mother board and 12 on the Daughter board) Clearpoint sells this 16Mbyte daughter board, which shuts down the 2Mbyte on the mother board, allowing the system to see 16Mbytes. Price: at GSA schedule $2100! Can't beat that! Stuart Cohnen Network Manager, The City College of New York Internet: STRCC@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU Bitnet : STRCC@CUNYVM or ENGASC@CCNYVME

Can't beat that! Well, I don't really know too much about the VS2000, but I've had experience with Clearpoint (satisfied customer stuff) and have had no problems at all. They are a very reputable firm and not likely to be selling `snake oil' type products. A similar thing holds true for the uVAX II; if you stick in a 16MB board, you lose the 1MB on the cpu board, but get the whole glorious 16MB and at a far lower price that DEC. My Clearpoint memory is working so well that I don't even remember which machine it's in anymore; last time I did anything with it was when I put it in the machine a few years back. -stefan #include <std_disclaimers_about_being_only_a_satisfied_customer_and_getting_\ no_more_that_50%_on_each_sale_I_refer_to_Clearpoint> -- ---------------------------------------------- MA Bell: (708) 260-5019 --------- Stefan Brandle UUCP: ...!{obdient,uunet!tellab5}!wheaton!stefan Wheaton College or stefan@wheaton.UUCP Wheaton, IL 60187 "But I never claimed to be sane!"

Anyone with any experience with one of these beasts? We have installed their 8Meg boards and things have worked out great. Of course on the diskless nodes it perks the guys right up. As to whether a VS2000 can use a full 16Meg I would not know, my concern would be more along the lines of whether the VS2000 has sufficient cooling and power supply capacity to handle the additional load without reliability problems. --R J Auletta rauletta@gmuvax2.gmu.edu

Can't beat that! We have two such 16MB Clearpoint memory boards for our 2 VAXstation 2000 workstations. We are very satisfied both with the product and with Clearpoint. The board is easy to install. It comes with a small booklet describing how. It is a true 16MB memory board. It fits in place of the 2MB/4MB daugther board and simply over-laps with the existing 2MB on the motherboard. Clearpoint has also been very helpful. There support hot-line has been quick and knowledgable about the VAXstation and their Clearpoint products. We have had to call them on 2 occassions. You see depending upon what revision the VAXstation 2000 motherboard is, you may have to install/strap the Clearpoint 16MB board differently. The manual attempts to describe as many situations as possible, but we encounted a VS2000 that had a weird revision level. We called the hotline, and they quickly gave us the instructions for this particular revision. You definitely cannot beat the price. Go for it! Unfortunately we bought out Clearpoint 16MB memory boards about 1 1/2 years ago, so we paid ~$10K cdn (~$8K US). Nevertheless, 16MB definitely gives the old VAXstation 2000 a bit more spunk, and makes the darn thing almost useful!! Can't beat that! > That is a really good price! We bought the *8Meg* board for $2395 in February and we normally get GSA pricing. I guess the vendor we went to didn't offer GSA discounts. We have had no problems with the 8 meg board and installation couldn't have been easier. _____________________________________ Brian V.
