Getting it to work was relatively easy. It turns out that it was merely a matter of finding the right section of the manual. (okay, okay ... so I'm new at this.) The necessary info is in the "uucp Utility" section of the manual. Just follow the directions there for manually setting it up. (My mistake was trying to let it do it automatically.) The cables I used I ordered from DEC: a BC16E-10 cable and -- now pay attention -- an H8571-C adaptor. No other hardware was necessary. My modem is an E-tronics 2400, fully compatible with hayes. If anyone else is interested, I will post in more detail what I put in the relevant files (/etc/ttys, /var/uucp/L-devices, /etc/acucap, /etc/remote).
