[comp.sys.dec] X-based tn3270 and 3rd party drives

Folks,

We have a NEW DS5000 and love it...uh, sorta. Some things we need to do
just aren't covered here and maybe someone can point us in a direction for
more info/help.

1) We still, hey, I wasn't born when this thing was installed, have a LARGE
campus IBM hulker around and a lot of our users want to get to it. I pulled
latest tn3270 code from ucbarpa and it compiled no problem. Unfortunately,
it doesn't want to work inside a DECWindow. I get "entry not found in /etc
/map3270". Is there an entry I should make to that file to make this work?
I tried the obvious thing and added an alias "xterm" in the vt100 definition
but to no avail. Failing this, is there an X-based tn3270 emulator?

2) We MUST add more disk to this beast, but want to do it 3rd party (hey,
a price of $2700.00 for 785MB you bet we're gonna try!). Now, most of
us are from SUN shops. Uhm, the ROM cnfg command doesn't recognize the drive
(well, no reason it should, it really isn't a rzxx at all) and won't pass
on it (meaning we can't boot anymore). Has anyone done this before (experiences
on the 3100 are VERY useful as well, don't be shy!) and can lend some pointers?
Is the the equivalent of the SUN "format" utility or, on the guts level, the
DEC version of /usr/etc/newfs? How does one get a drive recognized by
these machines?

Thanks in advance for any help. If there's a large response I post a summary.

Check the TERM type DECwindows is setting. It may be a terminal more advanced
or more weird than your termcap/map3270 is set up form.

printenv or the equivalent for your shell ought to show you what it is. I would
guess at a vt300 or decterm offhand.
