I'm trying to integrate an external exabyte 8 mm tape archiver (scsi interface) into a decstation 3100 with two external disk drives. One of the drives is a dec 380 megabyte, the other is a third party (Hitachi) 780 megabyte. I can dump the 380 megabyte contents to tape flawlessly, but have yet to dump the 780 megabyte successfully. The dump usually goes to 10-50% complete before it freezes up (the red light on the exabyte unit stays on, and sometimes the system crashes). Postition of the various units on the scsi daisy chain seems to affect the performance but does not fix the problem. The exabyte is a model STSOTT1 recently purchased from dilog inc. The company insists it's set up for use with the decstation 3100. Unlike earlier model exabytes, there are no exposed dip switches or other adjustments to make inside the unit (aside from setting the address.) I'm dumping using the unix string: /bin/dump 0usdf 12000 6666 /dev/nrmt0h /usr2 where /usr2 is the name of the file system on the 780 megabyte disk. Any hardware or software suggestions will be most appreciated! -- Peter Schmitt UNIX/VMS Consultant Kiewit Computation Center User Services Dartmouth College (603)646-2085 Hanover, NH 03755 Peter.Schmitt@Dartmouth.EDU
