I have been asked to gather some information about the following items. We are looking for both good or bad comments and recommendations. We need to buy a backup system, memory and X-terminals for a lab setup. The system will be used for X application development and educational X11 classes under ULTRIX. Our system configuration will be as follows : (1) DEC3100server with 16mb of memory. (2) 3 DEC3100 Stations as clients with 8MB (one has an RZ33? disk). (3) 2 RZ55 (332MB) disks (4) A yet undetermined 600MB+ hard disk. (5) TK50 (95MB) tape unit. (6) A yet undetermined number of X terminals (see question below) Questions I need answered : (1) Tape Backup : What would you recommend for the above setup ? What are you using ? Which brands to/not_to buy? (2) What other vendors, beside DEC whose prices are too high, sell memory for DEC3100? I want to bring them up from 8mb to 16mb. Price and phone number would be appreciated here. (3) X-terminal : We are looking at the DEC VT1000 and some others. What kind of overhead do X11 terminal have on the system? What do you recommend? How does it affect the performance of the system? How many units would you have on the above setup ? What are you using? Any information on the above (especially phone numbers and addresses) would be appreciated. I would also like to hear any kind of comments on the above setup. If there is anything else you think I need to consider please feel free to comment on it. Thanks. Jim Moore -- +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- James D. I would consider an 8mm Exabyte-based unit. Our's comes from AVIV, works fine, but it is QBUS rather than SCSI. > (2) What other vendors, beside DEC whose prices are too high, sell memory > for DEC3100?
