[comp.sys.dec] DEC 3100 Disks and tapes

DISKS:
Our group has had good luck using Wren-V's and Wren-VI's with the
DEC 3100's. We have been using the V's for about a year now, and
the VI for about a week now. We have not had any problems with
   any of these units.
There are also a lot of DEC 3100's around here using RZ55's which
have also been performing flawless. (Of course, the only problem with
with them is the higher price.)

When we purchased the Wren-V and VI's, we purchased them without
installation, so we did have to create a new entry in /etc/disktab.
The doc we got did tell the number of tracks, and the number of
cylinders, but not the number of sectors but a call to the vendor
will get you this number also. (In theory, you should be able to
compute the number of sectors from the other numbers, but it doesn't
   seem to work out.)

If you would like the names of the companies, send email to me
   at zimmer@calvin.stanford.edu.

8mm Tape units.
We are considering getting an 8mm Exabyte for out DEC 3100's. Is
any one brand better then the other? One vendor I talked to said that
I don't need any additional software. ie that we already had a
driver for it under ultrix 2.1. Is this true? Also, how hard is it
to do multiple dumps to the the same tape.

Thanks for any help,
Andrew
