[comp.sys.dec] Any info on DEC's new VT1200?

rgc@wam.umd.edu (Ross Garrett Cutler) (08/08/90)

Hello...does anyone have the inside scoop as to what DEC's new VT1200
will be like? My rep. said that we will get the VT1200 instead of the
VT1000, and it will be "better", but he could not elaborate. Any
info would be greatly appretiated.

PS: It is to ship ~ Aug 23.

I heard (from DEC :-) eight times. does that amount to an admission
that the current one is at least 4 times too slow ?

Twice as fast as a turtle in molasses still ain't to fast.

Think I'll wait for the next generation, whatever they'll call it.
VT2000? Naw. Sounds too much like VS2000. Shudder.

VT1200 == VT1000 with new ROM's. The name was changed to distinguish it from
the VT1000, because ofthe bad rep the VT1000 has gotten thus far.

VT2000 == VS2000? You may be pretty close to reality here ;-)

The VT1200 differs from VT1000 in three respect as given below:

    0 Performance

VT1200 code is over all two times faster than the VT1000 V1.2 code.
Graphics (circle, ellipses, wide line, pattern fills etc) in partucular
is 4-8 times faster depending upon the graphic operations.

    0 Better Monitors

VT1200 will ship with our new high resolution (1280x1024 for 19",
1024x864 for 15"), and high refresh rate (72HZ, flicker free) monitors.
These monitors have builtin tilt and swivel for better ergonomics.

        In contrast, VT1000 used 60HZ, 1024x864 monitors.

New monitors are the best in their class. Both of the new monitors
        are 100 dpi monitors.

0 More memory in the base system

VT1200 will ship with 2MB of base memory. In contrast VT1000 shipped
        with 1MB of memory.
