Has anyone had this problem?...When upgrading to ULTRIX V4.0 with
DECwindows, xsetroot no longer works properly. Whereas before
xsetroot -bitmap xxx.bit &
in the ~/.X11Startup file gave me a customized root window, now
it only sets the hidden sections of the root window (ie. that which is
behind the Icon Box and the DECTerms).
Has anyone found and/or fixed this behaviour? I have tried moving
the xsetroot command to the .login and to the session manager Autostart
box---with no effect.

Evidently, dec windows covers up the root window, who knows why. It means that not only does xsetroot not work quite right, other programs that do stuff in the root window fail also. Try using xrefresh. Or, even better, get rid of dec windows. Constance Stillinger (connie@sushi.psych.nwu.edu) Assistant Prof., Dep't of Psychology Northwestern University --

Your problem is not DECwindows (and you are really only running X with the DECwindows window manager). But the problem... or culprit here... is the DECwindows Window Manager. If you use a different Window Manager (The Motif(TM) Window Manager will soon be the standardly supported Window Manager from Digital and is available today) this should not occur. Fred
