I'm still trying to set up a Sony Read/Write SCSI Optical Drive on a DS3100. It's set up as unit 3 along with an RZ55 and a TK50 on the SCSI bus. The hardware is visible to the console monitor and I did a >>scsi fm 3 which worked. The drive passed the DEC extended mode self test, but failed the >>scsi cd 3 (Read/write test for SCSI hard drive) with "illegal data out length specified" and "Drive write error***". The drive can be set up and it returns inquiry respones and a ready status. The problem is when using rzdisk. I issued #/bin/rzdisk -f /dev/rrz3c and the system just went away hung (^C did nothing). It came back only after turning the power to the drive off. Any other rzdisk options have the same effect. I am running Ultrix 4.0. I had similar problems with earlier versions of Ultrix, and thought that 4.0 would solve them. [Iteration of problems deleted] The problem is that the DECstations speak SCSI2 and the Sony MO doesn't. I have yet to find anyone (with one exception - but his suggestions don't seem to help at all) who can make it work. We're going to be putting our drive on our Sun. -Devin |> -- |> Horace Dediu \"That's the nature of research--you don't know |GTE Laboratories |> (617) 466-4111\ what in hell you're doing." `Doc' Edgerton |40 Sylvan Road |> UUCP: ...!harvard!bunny!hhd0................................|Waltham, MA 02254 |> Internet: hhd0@gte.com or hhd0%gte.com@relay.cs.net..........|U. These are -- somewhat -- independent: a device can implement the SCSI-II command set without the hardware bus enhancements. However, the converse is not true: the hardware enhancements, such as wide data transfer and synchronous data transfer require negotiation as described in the SCSI-II spec. I suspect that the original poster was referring to the command set capabilities. These are, as far as I can tell, a superset of the SCSI-I with "common command set." I don't think any DECstations implement the wide or fast scsi bus hardware enhancements.
