[comp.sys.dec] VAX 11/730 R80 Problems

jar@konkord.uucp (John Roberts) (09/26/90)

Here's my Vax question for today,

We have a 730 at school with a R80 drive. When we tried to
load VMS on it, Standalone backup would come back with
'FATAL CONTROLLER ERROR!'. So, being a smart person, I went
out and found the first R80/RL02 (there on the same board)
I could find. I put the new controller in the 730 and was
ready for it to load vms. No such luck. Same problem. I then
checked all the cables going to and from the R80, (yes, I
'ohmed' each 50+ pin cable. What else is there to do at school?)

Nothing wrong with the cables. I then got my hands on a R80
diag book from DEC. I ran ALL the tests on the R80 (the R80
has self diags like the RA series). ALL the tests passes.

I then tried to load VMS on RL02 (yes, I know, RL02 are only 10meg)
But it did load VMS (for the first 10 meg at least).

So, as you can imagine, I am very confused. WHAT COULD BE THE
	PROBLEM????

Any help would be great! Thank!!!!

Two things come to mind: 1) The personality module on the R80 could be
bad - the tests don't check all of it, or 2) You have found a stand-alone
backup bug (welcome to the [large] club). Try an older or newer version
and see if that helps.
