[comp.sys.dec] HELP! RQDX3 & RSTS/E

timt@lakesys.lakesys.com (Tim Thompson) (10/01/90)

I am attempting to make the switch from an RQDX2 to an RQDX3,
and am having quite a problem. Perhaps someone can help me.

First off, I have two RD53's, and an RX50. I was using
one RD53 and the RX50 on the RQDX2, and was having no (apparent) problems.

I received the 2nd RD53, and the RQDX3.

Utilizing DEC diagnostics, I re-formatted both drives, using
ZRQCC0.BIC; The 2nd drive had 85 revectored blocks. Kind of
high, but it shouldn't be a problem.

After formatting, I booted the RSTS/E V8-D SYSGNL disk (RL02,)
and DSKINT'ed both drives. The first went off without a hitch.

The second decided to return a continuous stream of errors, which
I aborted after 110 (or so) errors. After putzing around, I realized
that I had the two drive data cables reversed. I corrected that, and
both drives now DSKINT correctly.

I then COPY a minimal system to DU0. That goes fine, as well.

Using the HARDWARE option, a LIST shows -

TT0: 177560 060
RL: 174400 160 Units: 3(RL02)
RU0: 172150 310 Units: 0(RD53) 1(RD53) 2(RX50) 3(RX50)
KL0: 176500 300

KW11L 177546 100 (Write-only)

Using the start option, with all other devices disabled,
except the drives, console, RL02, and KL0, it bombs.

I do see something peculiar though. As soon as it reaches the
point where it would normally say "x Devices Disabled"
(If there were devices specified, that aren't there,) it attempts
to access the drive. At that time, the LED on the RQDX3 starts
flashing.

Controller set-up problems?
Software problems? (A possibility, due to a minor "fudge" made on the
                    distribution pack.)

Other information which might be useful in analysis:

There is only one jumper installed on the RQDX3, other than the
jumpers required to set the address of the controller. This jumper
is located directly behind the right-hand side of the 50-pin connector.
There is a row of 4 pins there, lined up towards the rear of the board
(parallel to the side of the board.) The jumper installed is on the two
rear-most pins.

(Isn't there a jumper that should be installed, indicating what
logical unit number the controller starts at?)

(This controller was previously in use on a MicroVax.)

This is NOT in a BA23 or BA123. This is in a BA11, with a
BA23 distribution panel, and front-panel console. It is attaced
to my H9275 backplane, and H7861 power supply.

There are two switches on the front-panel console (dip switches
on the PC board), one is for the LTC, and I'm not sure what the
other is for.

(Is there a limit on how long drive cables should be? Mine are under
4 feet total, between drives, and controller.)

Operating system is RSTS/E, update "D". All mandatory patches
are installed.  Two other patches are installed, as well;
22-bit addressing for RH11 (Emulex SC03, no longer in use,) and
a Sigma patch, allowing 8 lines on a DZV11 multiplexer. These
shouldn't affect MSCP operation, though.

Format program is ZRQCC0, RQDX3 proms are 216, and 217E5.
Boot ID is KBF11-BH V1.0.

Processor speed was increased to 18.333 Mhz
(26.666 Mhz crystal was bypassed, and a 36.666 Mhz crystal
was put on-board, for an approximate 5Mhz increase.)

Thanx for your time and assistance.
