[comp.sys.dec] RQDX3 still hangs.

timt@lakesys.lakesys.com (Tim Thompson) (10/05/90)

For those of you who missed the last episode -

I have -

BA11-SA, with an H9275 backplane.
Qty (1) RQDX3 controller, with 216/217E5 (the first!) proms.
Qty (1) BA23 distribution panel.
Qty (1) BA23 front panel console, 4-button.
Qty (1) RX50-AA
Qty (2) RD53-AA

And associated cabling, power supplies, etc.

I didn't run into problems, until I decided to add the 2nd RD53.

I'm getting conflicting stories from everyone.

Some say that the BA23 panel won't, and can't be made to
support 2 RD53's AND an RX50.

Still others insist that I need an RQDXE.

I was just informed that if I pull pins 5 & 6 of the 10-pin
connector on the BA23 distribution panel HIGH, that it would
solve my problems. It did, sort of. Diagnostics now at least
recognize that there is an RD53 there. It will even format it.

Software (RSTS/E) hangs upon boot-up.
It will start a few seconds after I remove the drive cable to
the second RD53.

I talked to someone who filled me in on the RQDX3 jumpers, and
I am now convinced that it is the way that the 2nd hard drive is
connected.

Question - I can leave Write Protect pulled high, to enable
writes to the drive, but what about Drive-Ready?

It occured to me earlier that this may be a bi-directional
data line, and that forcing high may interfere with
            normal operation.

I dunno.

If you have time, please leave your number, and a good
time to call, if you have an answer/suggestions for me.

("Stop your whining" and "Buy a PC" are NOT considered
  to be good suggestions.)

Please hurry. I'm getting grey-er by the day.
