[comp.sys.dec] help needed with PDP11 / RSTS/E

pierrot@opal.cs.tu-berlin.de (Tatjana Heuser) (10/17/90)

The sudden death of our system administrator causes
some _real_ problems to someone familiar with UNIX
Systems only. So I'd be _really_ grateful if somebody
could answer me the following (probably simple) questions:

- How to change the system password for modem access?
  (_nobody_ knows the current one)
- How can I get any Informations on how long that man was logged
in last? (system files touched etc.) The time he logged in
I already know. Whats needed is the uration of his connection.
- Which jobs have priority to be continued to keep the system running?

If anybody could help me on these (and maybe more) questions he'd
save a school from chaos :-)
But remember, I dunno nothin' bout VMS or RSTS !!!
(nor does anybody else of the teaching staff...)
(Ok, they know as much as to work with their accounts, but that's
all.)

thanx,
  Tatjana

Assuming you are using RSTS/E Version 9.*, log into an account that has
WACNT privilege.
(You can check to see if you have WACNT privilege with the SHOW
ACCOUNT/FULL command.)

1. Use the command SET PASSWORD/SYSTEM to change the system password.

2. The command SHOW ACCOUNT/ACCOUNTING [ppn], (where [ppn] is the
account number, such as [10,10]),
will give you the connect time for that account since that account
was created, or since the
accounting statistics for that account have been reset. It will not
tell you the connect time
    for any one session.

3. There aren't any jobs that have to be running for a RSTS/E system to
run. There are "system"
jobs that are normally running. The job ERRCPY is normally running
to log any system hardware
errors. A Print/Batch server job is also normally running.

All my answers are based on RSTS V9.0 or newer. If you're using an older
version, send mail or followup and I can research it.

You need to have a privileged account to do this. If you know the password
to 1,2 that should do. Failing in that, do whatever you do to shut the sys-
tem down and during the reboot, when it says "Proceed with system startup?",
type Control-C. You now have a fully privileged account.

  SET SYSTEM/PASSWORD=new-password

  will change it.

Not available. Accounting is kept, but it is a running total since a reset,
and you don't know when that was. You could do a DIR/DATE to find the date
last written (most likely, there are other options for that data field).

Normally you'll have ERRCPY to log any errors, PBS to handle print and
batch processing (you might have some other jobs like OPSER instead).

Any time. Feel free to send mail, or followup in comp.os.rsts if you
need anything.
