[comp.sys.dec] Ultrix 1.2 woes...

jim@piggy.ucsb.edu (Oreo Cat) (10/23/90)

Before I start moaning about my problems, I'd like to repeat a request I've
made here a few times before: Does anybody have disks or tapes for Ultrix
more current than 1.2 which they would be willing to sell with license for
same? I know I could get the most current brand spanking new version from
DEC, but the price they charge is not worth it. Since the MicroVax II is
5 years old now I suspect a lot of them have been retired. So if you have
or had one of these systems, look around for some disks or tapes collecting
dust. They would make my system very happy. Optimally I'd like something
with DEC Windows or X11, but I'd be happy with something that works at the
moment.

Now for my problems: The disks I have weren't quite complete. First of
all, the third boot disk was from Ultrix 1.1, and all the other disks
from 1.2. Unfortunately this is the disk with the generic kernel on it
so that after everything was installed I had a 1.1 kernel, but everything
else was 1.2. Still, it booted OK and most things worked. But important
kernel specific things like ps don't work. ps is obviously very important,
and I've found it very difficult to live without. So I set out to rebuild
the kernel and ran into oodles of trouble. First there was no configuration
file. Fortunately I was able to write one by hand using some of the
instructions in the manual. Then I ran config, switched to the directory
and ran make depend, and make. Both worked fine, but when the make got
to the "loading vmunix" stage it flaked out with an undefined "_clearseg".
I did some probing and found that machdep.o is the file referencing it. I
also searched through all the .o files in /sys/BINARY.mvax, and wasn't
able to find this cookie in any of them. I suspect it's another file that
some how vanished from the disks. Anyone have any ideas on this one?

Well, compared to this, all of my other problems are fairly minor, so I
won't go into them now. Thanks in advance for any help!
