DECNET ethernet addresses ... >>>We also hear rumours that AA-00-04-... machines may under some >>>circumstances use AA-00-03-<same thing>. >> >> I've never seen this - maybe a DEC expert knows? > > Who, me? Well, if you insist... > Well, its not me, but I want to point you to rfc1060 if you are interested. > AA-00-03-... is the hardware address on the older DEC interfaces, such as > the DEUNA. It is changed to AA-00-04-... when DECnet is started, just as on Nearly. aa:00:03:... has been a global physical address. aa:00:04:... is the logical address for systems running DECNET. Today, there are only very few of those who have aa:00:03:... addresses - I didn't find any on our net. > the other boards. I don't know why DEC changed to 08-00-2B-... when they came > out with the newer interfaces. Perhaps people were being confused by the -03- > vs. -04-? To my knowledge, the 08:00:2b:... adresses are given to DEC Hardware not running DECNET. All our Terminal Servers, for example, have such an address. It might be interesting to know that DEC has also aa:00:00 to aa:00:02 reserved, but the rfc claims these addresses to be obsolete. The address 08:00:58 is reserved for decsystem-20. So far, the hardware id addresses. Now, the multicast addresses: Address type explanation 09-00-2B-00-00-00 6009? DEC MUMPS? 09-00-2B-00-00-01 8039? DEC DSM/DTP? 09-00-2B-00-00-02 803B?
