[comp.sys.dec] gcc and other Ultrix problems

jmg@cernvax.cern.ch (mike gerard) (12/01/90)

When Mike Iglesias said that a DS3100-compatible GCC could be got from
foobar.colorado.edu my heart leapt: could this finally be the public
domain software which would work first time.

I should be so lucky!

Mine is an Ultrix 4.0 with the mandatory patch TK50 applied.
When I faithfully follow the instructions, including the
   config.gcc decstation
then type "make" I get 15 minutes of happiness then

_eprintf
as: Error: Can't find or exec: /usr/lib/cmplrs/cc/as0./
: No such file or directory
*** Error code 1

Stop.

Of course the thing cannot find this as0. directory: it ain't there!

I notice mentions of as0 and as1 in the Changes file but nothing obvious
to change in the Makefile. Any help?

Last week the problem was trying to make X11R4: turned out that it
failed near the end because the DEC cpp has at least one "feature" (but I
don't remember anyone telling me about that). Having got round that I
have desperately been trying to move my DS3100 to use xdm rather than
the DEC session manager etc., but it steadfastly refuses my login
attempt with xdm diagnostics which are not very helpful. Won't take
the NCD either!

Next week it will undoubtedly be a hassle to try to get XView2.0 up
and running. As for the font situation, I seem to have the same fonts
n times over (both byte-orders, pcf and snf) according as to whether
I want them used on Ultrix 3.0, 3.1, 4.0, NCD, VT1000/1200: what a bloody
mess!

Anyway, if someone can help on the gcc problem I would be eternally grateful.

(Please don't tell me that I need Ultrix 4.1: other people in Europe will
know how long the bottle takes to float across the big pond)
