Rtar, rdd and rmt are programs for 4.2 BSD which are very much like tar, dd, and mt but allow access to a tape device on a remote host with the syntax of rdump, rrestore and rcp. These programs obviate the tedious piping of input and output through 'rsh host dd ...' and in general make life simpler. They also run faster than the piped versions (as much as 25% in some crude tests I have made). These programs (like rdump and rrestore) make use of the program /etc/rmt on the remote host to do all of the relevant tape manipulation. As a consequence of popular demand, a shell archive containing editor scripts for the sources has been posted to net.sources. The scripts require vanilla 4.2 BSD source files for several programs in order to work, but if they are in /usr/src (and really are untouched), then a simple 'make sources' will fetch them and change them appropriately. (It was suggested that this is a good way to get around source license problems, and I agree. It also saves space in the posted file.) Mike Muuss at BRL (mike@BRL.ARPA) has offered to make the sources available for FTP by ARPAnauts.
