[comp.sys.dec] SMG$ routines called from VAX C ?

I am porting a menu-driven VMS software from Fortran to  C. 
The SMG$ manual sasy that SMG$routines can be called from C, but I encounter 
an endless loop by trying to create a pasteboard. Any C example on just 
creating a window and selecting from a menu mostly appreciated.
