I have a DECstation 5000 running ULTRIX 4.0 with an email problem preventing
outbound email from getting across the network and to its destination. Inbound
email is not prevented from reaching me. The network is ethernet with
mainly Suns connected. There are no VAXen connected.
The symptom is that mail returns with a copy going to "Postmaster",
containing the following cryptic:
----- Transcript of session follows -----
<<< RCPT TO:reed@fiji@apache@oakhill@motsps
<<< DATA
<<< 554 Cannot exec [TCP]
554 smtpquit TCP: stat 69
554 reed@fiji@apache@oakhill@motsps... Service unavailable
----- Unsent message follows -----
This error occurs whenever "mhmail" routines are used, as in from "dxmail",
but not generally when "sendmail" or "/usr/ucb/mail" are used (unless sendmail
tries to send off site... then the error occurs again).
I have tried the following to correct the problem with negative results:
1) Two seperate "sendmail.cf" files.
2) Rebooting from an old kernel, built before I deleted LAT, DECNET, and
SYS_Trace from "/sys/conf/mips/MYMACHINE".
3) Messed with 'domainname', 'hostname', 'bindsetup', and '/etc/svc.conf'.
6) Several calls to DEC software support produced no suggestions for any
possible fix.
If anyone has a concrete suggestion, I'd sure appreciate it.
