[comp.sys.dec] Generating bootable tapes from CDROM?

bqsy1@vax5.cit.cornell.edu (Andrew R. Orndorff) (02/22/91)

Does anyone have a shell script or other program which will
generate a bootable TK50 or TK70 Ultrix 4.X tape? We have a single CD
drive, but a number of machines aren't on the same ethernet, so (according
to the Digital documentation) RIS won't work in this case, but the other
machines do have TK50 tape drives. Also, we'd rather not be moving the
CD drive around to the various machines.
I know that one of the first two files is the bootstrap code, and
the third file on the tape appears to be the genvmunix kernel. After that
the tape would follow the familiar setld format - it's just that we don't
know what is necessary to place the bootstrap code and whatever the other
of the first two files is, onto the tape.
Would we use some form of the 'dd' command?
Any help at all would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
