[comp.sys.dec] Thin wire versus twisted pair in office environment

doelz@urz.unibas.ch (03/02/91)

We need to set up Ethernet connections in a office of (currently) 8 Macs,
and there will be two or three workstations and one X terminal added this year.
The floor is approx. 40 x 20 meters. Cabling can be achieved smoothly.
There is no existing wiring which can be used.

We run a standard thick wire cable, and thinwire with DEMPR/DESPRs.

Protocols to be supported include Decnet, IP, LAT, and Ethertalk (maybe
IPX).

Question:
What are the benefits/drawbacks of thin wire versus twisted pair?
We would like to have wall outlets at 16 spots in the office, which
should be easily extended by either daisy-chaining or new segments.

Alternatives I picked out from the catalogue are:

a) H4005 -> Thin wire : DESPR , one Segment, with Modular Faceplates (H3114)
b) 2 H4005 -> Twisted Pair: Two DETPR, (16 Segments), with Modular Faceplates
   (H3111) and H3350 adapters (costy... 16 units).
c) H4005 -> Thin wire: DESPR, -> SER Adapter (H3330) : Thin wire, and
   about 4 twisted pair cables Modular Faceplates (H3111), cable to Office
   Adapters (H3310), -> Thin wire to clusters of 4 stations each.

I would be ineterested in comments, and experience with such configurations.
