Alright, I won't jump... but I'm getting to that stage. I ordered a TRIMARCHI R/W Optical Drive "Laserase" in February. When I received it, it did not work properly and I have spent the last 6 weeks swapping hardware boards, and adjusting software with no luck. It still operates unreliably. Besides being very sensitive to the power up sequence, I can get it to operate and create a file system, however during a large tar from tape to disk, I get a read error each time. I still am not sure I have the correct SCSI flags in my entry in scsi_data.c for the kernal. If anyone has this drive and knows which flags listed below should be used, PLEASE mail me. Also, if you use the drive with no special device (RZxx, unknown on boot up), let me know. Thanks. Also, what is the correct largest partition that can be made on a platter? Which are correct? My system: DS3100 / Ultrix 4.1 SCSI_TRYSYNC (almost certainly NOT, causes all sorts of errors in use!) SCSI_STARTUNIT SCSI_MODSEL_PF recommended by Trimarchi SCSI_REQSNS recommended by Trimarchi SCSI_NO_DBBR SCSI_NO_OPTTABLE SCSI_REMOVABLEDISK recommended by Trimarchi SCSI_TESTUNITREADY SCSI_READCAPACITY Thanks a a lot, Gordie Jacobs

This drive was a notable exception to the rule. About a year ago I tried hooking the Laserase up to a PDP-11. I gave up on the drive when RSTS Backup (VMS style backup) got verification errors when doing a backup/verify from another SCSI disk. I would strongly suggest you try writing something and verifing when you get your other problems solved. It was about one error in every 50MB.
