From: Edjik <EGK%MIT-OZ@MIT-MC.ARPA> Yes, I have a copy. $1000 or best offer.. :-) --E+ -------
mike%rice@sri-unix.UUCP (03/07/84)
From: Mike Caplinger <mike@rice> Is there any chance that the HAKMEM is on line somewhere? 1972 was the dark ages, but not quite as much so at MIT... since ITS doesn't have any security, if somebody knows where it is on MC, we can all get it.

I have my copy right here... ;================================================== ITEM 169 (Gosper, Lenard, Mann, Root): To count the ones in a PDP6/10 word: [numbers in octal, of course -trb] LDB B,[014300,,A] ; or MOVE B,A then LSH B,-1 AND B,[333333,,333333] SUB A,B LSH B,-1 AND B,[333333,,333333] SUBB A,B ; each octal digit is replaced ; by the number of ones in it LSH B,-3 ADD A,B AND A,[070707,,070707] IDIVI A,77 ; casting out 63's ;================================================== I once figured out why this worked. From the MIT AIL bibliography description of HAKMEM: "I keep HAKMEM in the bathroom, it's great reading." -Knuth I think HAKMEM exists on disk at MIT or BBN somewhere. No, you can't have my copy for $1000. Andy Tannenbaum Masscomp Inc Westford MA (617) 692-6200 x274
ho%aerospace@sri-unix.UUCP (03/11/84)
From: Hilarie Orman ATW <ho@aerospace> I will provide copies for around $10 for copying and mailing charges. How much interest is there? The source, even if it were available, wasn't exactly easily readable in its raw form. But if enough people want to see it, a revised version might be produced. Any contributions for VAX hacks?
barmar@mit-eddie.UUCP (Barry Margolin) (03/11/84)
It is probably on MIT-MC. My guess is that the filename is "HUMOR;HAKMEM >". -- Barry Margolin ARPA: barmar@MIT-Multics UUCP: ..!genrad!mit-eddie!barmar

Forgive my ignorance, but I've not heard of HAKMEM before. What is it? A compilation of PDP-11 hacks, perhaps? Do I want one? Dave

Will one of the cogniscenti who actually have a copy please post the full title, date and report number. Most MIT reports are still available from NTIS if you have an adequate description. (HAKMEM is hardly enough, since NTIS has no nickname cross reference). -- Darrel J.
