[comp.sys.dec] MacX Version 1.1 on Ultrix 4.1 DecStations

root@mps.ohio-state.edu (System PRIVILEGED Administration) (04/25/91)

Dear X Window People:

I am trying to run MacX Version 1.0 or 1.1 on various types of MacIntosh
computers. We are using MacX to connect to DecStation 3100's and 5000's
running Ultrix Version 4.1. Well it worked OK under Ultrix Version 4.0 but
now it will not work under Ultrix Version 4.1. One problem we are having
with MacX Version 1.1 is as follows:

With Ultrix Version 4.0 and MacX 1.0 we had no trouble merging application
specific (which we need very badly for our work) X resources into the X resource
database, for any of the 4 possible displays in MacX. But with Ultrix Version 4.1
and either MacX Version 1.0 or 1.1, we cannot merge application specific X
resources except for display 0.0, which is black-and-white rootless. In other
words , after

    xrdb -merge .MacXresources

nothing shows up with

    xrdb -query

unless the display is set to DISPLAY=xxxx.0.0. We need color graphics for our
work.

I only have a preliminary MacX Version 1.0 manual but I have ordered a copy of the
new MacX Version 1.1 manual but Apple is VERY SLOW. DEC has never tried MacX
on ther stations and Apple's preliminary manual doesn't even list Ultrix.
Hence, we are looking for solutions in the dark. Does anyone out there in X
lan have any experience in this area? Please send me E-Mail directly (at
mrs@osustat.mps.ohio-state.edu) and post to this newsgroup. HELP!! I'm sinking
into X-sand. Take care and have a great day.

We also are having a peculiar problem with MacX on Ultrix 4.1. One of our
machines does not seem to like users logging in from MacX. If a command is
executed remotely from MacX by a user, no response occurs at all. Root is
able to execute commands without difficulty. If a user gives an incorrect
password, the response comes back from the DS5000 saying that the password
is incorrect, but if the password is correct nothing comes back from the
remote machine.
I can rlogin to the machine, and execute rsh commands from other Unix
boxes of various flavours without difficulty. And if I telnet into the
DS5000 and set my display to the Mac, I can display xterms without a problem.
The difficulty is obviously related to remote command execution, but I am
completely unable to trace it down.
