Could somebody please e-mail me some specs on the DS5000? What is the standard configuration? (HD, RAM,software, etc) Any expansion slots? Flavor of UNIX? (Is it Ultrix?) What is Ultrix supposed to be compatible with, BSD or SysV? Price? Speed? Graphics Hardware? I am trying to decide on a Workstation to buy for a computer consulting company I am starting..... Thanks in advance. ===== jonas

(HD, RAM,software, etc) Configuration range from a diskless system with 8 MB memory and the monochrome framebuffer and a 19" monitor to the 24 MB system with the PXG turbo (see graphics answer) and an RZ55 (332 MB). The base system includes a thinwire Ethernet adapter and SCSI controller. > Any expansion slots? Depending on your choice of graphics subsystem, two to zero TURBOchannel slots are available. Don't be surprised if we solve the zero availables with the PXG Turbo problem someday. The memory is expandable up to 420 MB using the 32 MB MS02-CA memory module. Using the MS02-AA 8 MB memory module it's 120 MB. The two can't (CAN NOT) be mixed. Currently available TURBOchannel options are a thick- wire Ethernet adapter and a SCSI controller. I think an FDDI adapter is also available, but it isn't listed in the catalog I've got. The catalog does mention a VME I/O expansion box, but there doesn't seem to be corresponding TURBOchannel device (yet). Supported SCSI devices available include: RZ55 - 332 MB disk. RZ56 - 665 MB disk. RZ57 - 1.0 GB disk. TLZ04 - 1.2 GB 4 mm digital audio tape (RDAT). TKZ08 - 2.2 GB 8 mm tape. RRD40 - 600 MB CDROM. RX23 - 1.44 MB diskette drive. RX33 - 1.2 MB diskette drive. TZ30 - 95 MB cartridge tape (TK50). The RZ disks, RX diskettes and TZ30 come in a dual drive expansion box about the same size as the system box. There may be more, but it wasn't in the catalog I had handy. > Flavor of UNIX? (Is it Ultrix?) What is Ultrix supposed to be compatible > with, BSD or SysV? ULTRIX V4.1 (as I write this). Mostly BSD, with enough stuff to make it real close to being Sys V Release 2 compatible. It's also X/Open and POSIX compliant. > Price? Using the December 1990 price book the price of the systems listed above are: Diskless mono-chrome: 14,995 PGX TURBO: 57,300 We may have lowered the prices recently, so check with a DEC sales person to be sure. > Speed? 25 Mhz R3000/R3010. Dhrystone MIPS: 24 (V1.1) SPECmarks: 19.9 overall 18.9 Integer 20.6 Floating point Linpack: 6 Mflops single precision 3.5 Mflops double precision > Graphics Hardware? Monochrome frame buffer (MX), color frame buffer (CX), 8-plane with 2D graphics accellerator (PX), 8-plane 3D (PXG), 24-plane 3D (PXG), 24-plane high performance 3D system (PXG Turbo). I think the last one has an i860 in it. > > I am trying to decide on a Workstation to buy for a computer consulting > company I am starting..... Good choice... > > Thanks in advance. I have a table in front of me that says, the MIPS rating is 27.3 and Linpack figures are 6.4 and 3.7 for SP and DP, resp. -amitabh. _______________________________________________________________________________ Amitabh Shah shah@santur.tay1.dec.com--(INTERNET) Digital Equipment Corporation {..}!decwrl!santur.tay1!shah--(UUCP) TP Systems Performance +1 508 952 4430--------------(PHONE) 151 Taylor St. Littleton MA 01460 +1 508 952 4197----------------(FAX)

Get a Sparc II from Sun. Most vendors port software to Sun first, DEC later (and usually not next!) That plus Ultrix sucks...
