[comp.sys.dec] Reading VMS backup tapes on UNIX

bill@casemo.UUCP (Bill Jensen) (05/07/91)

I need to transfer a large number of files from an old VAX/VMS
system to our UNIX environment. I have the vmsbackup program
from the net, and it works fine, but it lacks one important
feature - setting the file date and time to match the VAX
modification time. Does any one have a VMS backup reader that
can do this? Source code or FTP pointers gratefully accepted!

Failing this, can anyone explain to me how the date might be
extracted from the backup tape. From the vmsbackup source
that I have, I found what looks like the header structure
for the backup tape files, 256 bytes long. There do not appear
to be any fields in the structure that refer to date or time,
but there are 2 fields labled bbh_dol_t_spare_1 and bbh_dol_t_spare_2
sizes 20 and 22 bytes respectively, at offsets 12 and 232 bytes
respectively. I suspect that these would contain the time stamps,
but I don't know what format they would have. Any information
	would be appreciated.
