[comp.sys.dec] Experience with HP 8 GB DAT ?

weis@netmbx.UUCP (Dietmar Weis) (05/28/91)

The tape drive is called HP35480A and has a capacity of 8 GB.
Has anyone already used it - with DEC Hardware, and can tell me
sth about it, especially under Ultrix 4.x, (and VMS as well).

Comes with own driver, is really fast, or is faulty and so on.
Please followup to c.sys.dec, as it is propably of common interest.

Thank you very much.

Dietmar

"HP35480A" is the number for the OEM drive (ie. no box or power
supply). This product is not yet in volume production. Only OEM
evaluation units are shipping at present. It will be in full
production "shortly".

The HP35480A is a DDS DAT drive with built in data compression
hardware. The drive's capacity is dependant on the "compressability"
of the data it has to store. The compression is based on a
"Lempel-Ziv" type algorithm, similar to that used by the UNIX
"compress" command. The 8Gbyte figure is based on the assumption that
host data can be compressed by a factor of 4.

Kevin Jones.
