I'm trying to set up a VAXstation 3100 as a satellite node in a wide-area network. I have found, much to my consternation, that the funny little six-wire DEC proprietary async-communication port does not support full modem control -- I cannot detect carrier drop and am having problems controlling hangup on the dialup line. We're trying to set up a dynamic DECNET line on a dialup phone connection. It works pretty well, except that the end-user will have to occasionally manually hang up the modem. Has anybody out there encountered or solved this problem? What in the world did DEC think it was doing when it failed to design full modem control into the VAXstation 3100's? It even says it right there in the I/O User's Guide -- VAXstation 3100s cannot detect hangup. What ever happened to standards? RS-232 is pretty basic stuff.
