Hi there, I've been looking at those giant adds in the trade journals for the DECpc 433 Workstation, and I've got a few questions. What's special about the 486DX? Is it different from a plain 486? Is a coprocessor an option? What's the performance like? MFLOP? MIPS? SPEC? Will it conform to ACE standards? Is it upgradable to a MIPS chip? What's the standard configuration, i.e. how much memory, how much disk space, what external ports are there, what software comes with, etc.? What's the internal bus? EISA? Is it accessible? Who makes the monitor? DEC? Hitachi? Sony (Trinitron)? Runs OSF/1? Anybody had any experience with these? The network readiness and big screen are seem good features. Thanks! tim. The 486 is a full 32 bit microprocessor based on the 386 architecture (with some minor additions) but running about 2-3 times faster at the same clock speed. A floating point unit is included, but some PC manufacturers allow for a Weitek co-processor for slightly more performance. There are two flavours of 486 - 486 and 486SX, the SX model has the floating point co-processor disabled and currently runs at 20MHz (the minimum speed of the 486 is 25MHz). The DX name comes from the 386, which had a DX (full 32 bit bus) and SX model (16 bit bus). Note both 486 models are full 32 bit. The only performance figures I have are that the 486 is rated about 8-10 mips, and the 486SX is about 10% faster than a 33MHz 386. The figures don't say much! > Will it conform to ACE standards? Is it upgradable to a MIPS chip? The ACE standard includes specifications for Intel and MIPS microprocessors. I don't think they are supposed to be interchangeable. > What's the internal bus? EISA? Is it accessible? The expansion bus is EISA, with about 7 slots? That's all I know...
