[comp.sys.dec] PostScript Printer Symbiont for VMS/Multinet

brack@nexus.yorku.ca (Tony Brack) (06/11/91)

Circa 1989, during my absence from this institution, we obtained a
PostScript printer symbiont, ostensibly from a university in Texas
connected in some manner to SPAN. This has served us faithfully
since then without any modification.... TOO FAITHFULLY! Prior to
my return (Spring 1990), it appears that the souces had vanished, not
a problem provided things still work!

Recently, however, we decided to to a forklift upgrade of the old
UNIBUS VAXen to newer technology. Along with this, the host based
multiplexors were replaced with ports on a series of TCP/IP based
terminal servers connected via MultiNet. This works great for
unidirectional printer symbionts for line printers. However, symbionts
to drive PostScript printers must be bi-directional. This leaves us
with 2 options; find a suitable symbiont somewhere out there that
does the trick, or locate sources for the symbiont we are using, and
make it talk to MultiNet properly.

Any help in either area would be greatly appreciated!

I wrote that VMS printer symbiont. You can obtain the current
version via anonymous ftp from utadnx.cc.utexas.edu. There
is no direct support for TCP connections. It does work
fine for LAT connections if your terminal servers happen
to support LAT in addition to TCP.
