[comp.sys.dec] Has anyone used a DEC RRD40 CD ROM drive on a MAC?

rob@cs.aukuni.ac.nz (Rob Burrowes ) (06/11/91)

We have a spare DEC RRD40 CD ROM SCSI drive and I thought it might be nice
to have attached to my mac. Has anyone tried this? If you have can you
tell me how to go about it? I have tried the straight forward plug it in
and hope approach. I can be very optimistic at times.
Thanks.

Rob

There's no way to be certain for any arbitrary CD-ROM drive whether it
will work on a Macintosh, but you need a couple of things:
	1) a driver
	2) a SCSI CD-ROM drive :-)
	3) appropriate cabling.

The two companies I know of who sell generic CD-ROM drivers for the
Macintosh are:
     Optical Media International
     485 Alberto Way
     Los Gatos, CA 95032
     (408) 395-4332
     fax: (408) 395-6544
     AppleLink: OMI
     Internet: omi@applelink.apple.com
and
     Trantor Systems
     5415 Randall Place
     Fremont, CA 94538
     (415) 770-1400
     (415) 770-9910
     AppleLink: Trantor
     Internet: trantor@applelink.apple.com

They may be able to help you.

	No.

One of the primary problems you are going to see is that virtually
all of our SCSI devices are SCSI 2 compatible. This means that they
can do things like make requests to run synchronous which the MAC
SCSI implementation probably won't cope with (ask your Apple folks).
If I recall correctly, Apple started with a working version of the
SCSI protocol that was previous to any defined interface. If my
memory serves (and it may be off a little, please check with your
local Apple folks) there are specific SCSI devices for Apple SCSI.

Nothing wrong with optimisim. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

You're welcome. I'm sorry that I couldn't provide more specific help.
There are SCSI guides available on gatekeeper in /pub/TriAdd if you
want to grab them on anonymous ftp.

	Folks,

My apologies to Rob Burrowes for missing a lead on how to get
an RRD40 CD-ROM running on a MAC. And, my thanks to Joe Craparotta
out of DEC Long Island for pointers to the solution.

The short news is that it is feasible to put an RRD40 onto a
	MAC and get it running.

				Thanx,
				  AJ

We have tried the other way around : that is hooking an Apple CD drive up
to a Decserver (for the Bookreader). This didn't work at all ...

It is indeed possible to use a DEC RRD40 with a Mac, as long as you get the
proper driver. There is a company in Woburn, Mass., that sells such a driver
for about $50. Well worth the investment, if you happen to have an RRD40
around. If anyone is interested, I could give them the name and number of
the company that sells the driver. I don't remember it off the top of my head,
though.

	Folks,

My apologies again. I've slipped into a time warp around here
lately and I'm extremely late in getting my post completed. I've
had a lot of requests for the "long news" so:

		Optical Access International

		800 West Cummings Park Suite 2050 617.937.3910
		Woburn, MA 01801 617.937.3950 FAX

As usual, I can't make any guarantees about how well this driver
works (although I've seen a number of notes from happy customers).
I hope that this information helps and my apologies again for
taking so long to complete the information (if only there were
two of me...now where did I put that cloning machine...).

				Thanx,
				  AJ
