Slowly we make progress. Here's the problem: I've got this DECsystem 5500 running Ultrix 4.1. I have a Xyplex printerserver Model 1400 running version 3.1 of the Xyplex software. I have a Printronix P6280L connected to port 3 on the printerserver. The printer has a Dataproducts interface. Hence the need to keep it on one of the parallel ports on the 1400. When I try to lpr a text file, most of the times it works fine. But occasionally, the printerserver and the DECsystem won't breakdown the connection between the two devices. This means that next time lpd tries to make a connection to the terminal server, the error file shows a error /usr/lib/lpd: lp: cannot open /dev/tty09: Socket is already connected If I use lcp, and disconnect the lat device (/etc/lcp -h /dev/tty09) then I can restart the queue (/etc/lpc restart lp) and the printing is happy, until the next time the connection doesn't get closed. I need help! Anybody else seen this? Anybody have printers working on a terminal server printing from Ultrix 4.1? It appears that the important parts are: LAT & Ultrix 4.1. I don't know if the DECsystem 5500 has anything to do with it. I also don't know if the brand of terminal server has anything to do with it. I am able to duplicate the problem with a serial port on a Racal/InterLan NTS200 connected to an HP deskjet printer (the printer was free for ordering pc's). Additional info: The printer and printerserver are working great from a PDP-11/84 running RSTS version 10.0. I have made the assumption that if that works, then it must be a problem with Ultrix. Bad assumption? (I should probably realize that any assumption is bad) One thing I will try is a workaround that I just thought of. I will use lcp to associate the device (/dev/tty09) with the terminal server and the port. This looks something like /etc/lcp -h /dev/tty09:NWU_PS1:PORT_3 Then instead of lpd setting up the connection, I should be able to treat /dev/tty09 as a regular serial port. I do have some patches for lat. The latest are: lat_scl1.o 2.10f lat_slot.o 2.8c lat_subr.o 2.6b lat_time.o 2.9c lat_vc.o 2.9c lta.o 2.10e ltt_trace.o 2.5a tty.c 4.5jfs DEC support is sending me some newer patches, but it was not clear whether they addressed the problems we are seeing. They have confirmed that I have my printcap file set up correctly (that wasn't exactly fun). I'd like to hear if someone is making this work on some type of terminal server with some type of printer from some sort of dec machine running Ultrix 4.1. Thanks for any assistance.
