[comp.sys.dec] Backup RZ57 to TLZ04?

qiangli@gauss.casr.fau.edu (Charlie Li) (07/01/91)

I am trying to do unattended backup too, but no luck yet.
From the manual, it seems saying any user activity could corrupt the
backup, so is it necessary to turn the machine to single user mode before
performing backup?

I am having a RZ57 1GB disk and a TLZ04 1.2 GB DAT Tape drive on our
DECstation 5000. And I have a rz0a (/) 20MB and rz0g (/usr) 900MB partitions.
Can I put them both on one tape? I used "dump 0uf /dev/rmt1h /usr" for the
partition rz0g. When I have used just a small part on the tape, how can I
utilize the other part?

When I do incremental backup, it seems to do the job all over. Where it
finds the last full save backup's info? Do I need the previous tape?
Can I use the same tape? Would that overwrite everything on the tape?
How can I erase a tape?

Is it possible to use "tar" to complete a file system backup?

Sorry to ask so many questions, I have read the manual's relative sections,
but could not get those answers or no luck to have them work yet.

Appreciate your help!
