Okay...the final results are here. First of all, I wish to thank everyone who participated in the poll. The amount of participation greatly exceeded my expectations. I recieved a total of 77 lists that were either mailed to me or grabbed from the net. Not everyone's list contained 20 entries. In fact, the average number of entries per list ended up being approx 8.8. A word about the scoring. I ended up giving an album 20 points if it was listed as #1 on a list, 19 points for #2, 18 points for #3, etc. If a person mentioned that his or her list was in no particular order, I distributed the total number of points equally amoung the albums listed. (For example, if a list contained 6 entries that were in no particular order, Each entry would recieve 20 + 19 + 18 + 17 + 16 + 15/ 6 = 15.83 points. -- This is why on the total scores listed below, you may see some decimals). In case of a tie, the album with the higher number of votes got the higher position. Finally, a word on the list. Each entry on the list has two numbers after it. The first is the total number of points that the album received. The number in parens is the number of lists on which the album appeared. I intended to list only those albums that were voted for at least twice. To my surprise, this left a list of 113 albums! So, to make things neat, I cut down the final list to 100. Now, without any further adieu....The Top 100 Albums/CDs of 1989 as voted on my rec.music.misc, rec.music.cd and alt.rock-n-roll: (1) Peter Gabriel/Passion 311.0(21) (2) Kate Bush/The Sensual World 267.9(18) (3) Tom Petty/Full Moon Fever 186.0(12) (4) Lou Reed/New York 183.0(11) (5) 10,000 Maniacs/Blind Man's Zoo 170.0(14) (6) The Cure/Disintegration 168.0(12) (7) B-52s/Cosmic Thing 160.0(11) (8) Bob Mould/Workbook 154.0(9) (9) Tears For Fears/The Seeds of Love 153.0(9) (10) Neil Young/Freedom 143.0(9) (11) XTC/Oranges and Lemons 142.0(11) (12) Indigo Girls/Indigo Girls 139.4(9) (13) The Pixies/Doolittle 136.5(9) (14) Elvis Costello/Spike 119.0(9) (15) Anderson,Buford,Wakeman, and Howe 105.0(7) (16) Paul McCartney/Flowers in the Dirt 101.0(6) (17) David Byrne/Rei Momo 96.0(7) (18) Joe Jackson/Blaze of Glory 94.0(6) (19) Roy Orbison/Mystery Girl 90.0(6) (20) Danny Elfman/Batman 87.0(6) (21) Jane Siberry/Bound by the Beauty 86.9(6) (22) Tracy Chapman/Crossroads 82.9(6) (23) Billy Joel/Stormfront 82.0(6) (24) Daniel Lanois/Acadie 80.0(6) (25) Bob Dylan/Oh Mercy 76.0(5) (26) New Order/Technique 73.5(4) (27) Joe Satriani/Flying in a Blue Dream 71.0(5) (28) Simple Minds/Street Fighting Years 70.0(4) (29) Laurie Anderson/Strange Angels 67.9(4) (30) The The/Mind Bomb 64.5(4) (31) Rolling Stones/Steel Wheels 63.0(4) (32) De La Soul/3 Feet High 60.5(4) (33) Stevie Ray Vaughn/In Step 59.0(4) (34) The Innocence Mission/The Innocence Mission 58.5(4) (35) Pete Townsend/The Iron Man 57.0(4) (36) Cowboy Junkies/Trinity Sessions 56.0(3) (37) Squeeze/Frank 54.0(4) (38) Rush/Presto 54.0(3) (39) Enya/Watermark 53.0(3) (40) Nanci Griffith/Storms 52.0(3) (41) Skinny Puppy/Rabies 51.0(4) (42) Jeff Beck/Guitar Shop 50.0(4) (43) The Cult/Sonic Temple 50.0(3) Fine Young Cannibals/The Raw and The Cooked 50.0(3) (45) Replacements/Don't Tell A Soul 49.0(4) (46) Kings X/Gretchen Goes to Nebraska 47.0(3) (47) The Neville Bros/Yellow Moon 46.0(3) (48) Todd Rundgren/Nearly Human 45.0(3) (49) Throwing Muses/Hunkpapa 44.0(5) (50) Living Color/Vivid 44.0(3) (51) Tone-Loc/Loc-Ed-After-Dark 42.0(3) Lyle Lovett/and His Large Band 42.0(3) (53) Tangerine Dream/Lily on the Beach 41.0(4) (54) Love and Rockets/Love and Rockets 40.0(4) (55) NRBQ/Wild Weekend 40.0(2) (56) Robin Hitchcock and the Egyptians/Queen Elvis 38.0(3) (57) Front 242/Front by Front 38.0(2) (58) Red Hot Chile Peppers/Mothers Milk 37.0(3) John Cougar Melloncampe/Big Daddy 37.0(3) (60) Don Henly/The End of The Innocence 37.0(2) (61) Wonderstuff/Hup 36.0(2) Queensryche/Operation:Mindcrime 36.0(2) Chris Rea/The Road to Hell 36.0(2) (64) Pop Will Eat Itself/This is This 35.0(2) Meat Beat Manifesto/Storm the Studio 35.0(2) (66) Pere Ubu/Cloudland 34.0(3) (67) Tim Finn/Tim Finn 34.0(2) Rickie Lee Jones/Flying Cowboys 34.0(2) Peter Case/Man with Blue etc 34.0(2) (70) Les Negresses Vertes/Mlah 32.5(2) (71) Bonnie Raitt/Nick of Time 32.0(2) (72) Eric Clapton/Journeyman 31.0(2) Bad Brains/Quickness 31.0(2) (74) Syd Straw/Surprise 30.9(3) (75) Madonna/Like A Prayer 30.0(2) Lenny Kravitz/Let Love Rule 30.0(2) David Byrne/Beleza Tropical 30.0(2) Clannad/Pastpresent 30.0(2) Chick Corea/Akostic Band 30.0(2) (80) Michelle-Shocked/Captain Swing 29.9(3) (81) Tanita Tikaram/Ancient Heart 29.0(2) (82) REM/Green 28.0(2) Phil Collins/But Seriously 28.0(2) Jethro Tull/Rock Island 28.0(2) (85) Manufacture/Terrorvision 27.0(2) (86) The Style Council/Sigular Adventures of 26.5(2) Swing Out Sister/Kaleidescope World 26.5(2) (88) Big Audio Dynamite/Megatop Pheonix 26.0(2) (89) The Grapes of Wrath/Now and Again 25.0(2) Steve Reich/Different Trains-Electric Counterpart 25.0(2) PIL/Nine 25.0(2) Blue Murder/Blue Murder 25.0(2) (93) The Call/Let the Day Begin 24.0(2) (94) Eurythmics/We Too Are One 23.0(3) (95) U2/Rattle and Hum 23.0(2) (96) The Mighty Lemon Drops/Laughter 22.0(2) Mudhoney/Mudhoney 22.0(2) (98) Tin Machine/Tin Machine 21.0(2) Queen/The Miracle 21.0(2) Prince/Batman 21.0(2) What really amazed me about the final results is that Passion and Senual World were the clear winners for 1989.
