[rec.music.misc] Litfiba - Pirata

sommar@enea.se (Erland Sommarskog) (06/09/91)

A bargain-bin finding. Looked a little like it could be heavy metal,
but I have a weakness for Italian music, so I gave it a chance.

Immidiately as I put it on I realized that the heavy-metal diagnosis
was all wrong. Warm harmonies with a slight samba flavour. Very cosy
and indeed a positive surprise. That was the opening track "Cangacerio".
The next track didn't have the samba flavour, but still those warm
harmonies and the same cosiness. This track, "Il vento" is very good,
and the album is worth owning just for that song.

The rest of album does not really par with the first two songs,
but is still quite good and some of the songs are actually im-
proving after some listenings.

There are some more rocky numbers like "Dio", "Raw Hide" and "Gira
nel mio cerchio". "Pioggia di luce" is a nice ballad. "Cannon Song"
is the song by Weill and Brecht. Together with "Raw Hide" the most
unnecessary track on the album. Well, the short "Tequila", also a
cover is maybe more a fun live sing than something to put on record,
but I like the vocalist shout "Lit-fi-ba" at the end of the song.

The album is recorded live, but "liberamento" reworked in the
studio. The live feeling is still there, both for good and bad.
Mostly good. It gives an open feeling to it, even if some passages
feel a little empty if you don't catch the audience interaction.

I know nil of this band, but I will certainly not hesitate to pick
up more material with them if I find any. The +3 is not earned so
much for its status of being something original to call "recommend-
able", as for just being a very nice album. (And the fact that I
have decidely to slightly modify my rating system so that +3 and
+4 will get more usual; maybe we'll even get a +5 some day.)
