[rec.music.makers] CMS or AdLib for Composition?

chris@max.UUCP (Christopher Nielsen) (04/20/91)

Is there anyone out there that does much with music composition using the CMS
or AdLib boards?

I'm planning on getting probably a CMS board, but before I do, I'd like to
hear from anyone that has some experience. A few questions...

Any experience with the sampling port?
Hows the MIDI port (I heard it was not all there... true?)
Are you happy with the types of sounds that can be programmed?
Anyone with low level programming experience with it?
How about some of the software available for these boards?

I'm sure I can come up with more, but... What would really be nice, is if
someone could send me a cassette of some of their work, to see the range of
sounds it can do (I'd send SASE, of course). I did get the demo tape from
AdLib, but I think it sounds stupid. For one thing, all the music on it
sounds the same, and the instruments all seem to have a sort of 'twangy'
sound. I'm sure it can do better than that.

I am interested in doing some composing, and general playing around. I'm
interested in games. I am interested in keeping in contact with others who
have similar interests, and exchanging software/info on these boards.
I'm also planning on interfacing an old Lowrey keyboard to the PC, for
real-time playing. It's a split keyboard, and the keys are real wood.
I need to wire a bunch of Hall effect sensors on mux boards to interface
it, but I like doing that sort of thing.

Thanks for help in advance!
