Just a short recommendation for the Macintosh MIDI interface driver available for $20 (plus $3 handling) from Opcode Systems. The driver provides two calls, one that sends a byte out the MIDI port and one that reads a byte from it; both use queues and are interrupt-driven so they shouldn't have any problems with dropping characters. The single floppy contains three versions in C (for the Lightspeed, Consulair, and Aztec compilers, though I've only tried the Lightspeed version) and one in assembler. The software also handles multiple clock rates found in different MIDI interfaces, though I've only tried it with my Opcode box. It appears that it's also possible to drive two interfaces, once on the printer port and one on the modem port, simultaneously. This is an absolutely painless way to get a MIDI program going; less than an hour out of the box, my Mac was playing polyphonic Bach. Opcode's address is: Opcode Systems 444 Ramona Street Palo Alto, CA 94301 (415) 321-8977 I have no connection with Opcode other than as a satisfied customer.
