[rec.music.synth] MIDI, Apple bare boards

ralphw@IUS3.IUS.CS.CMU.EDU (Ralph Hyre) (02/26/88)

As far as MIDI, I saw an the Apple MIDI Interface today. ($72.50 at CMU)
Reminds me a lot of an AppleTalk (now Apple LocalTalk) connector, and there's
probably even less circuitry in it. MIDI IN and OUT only, no THRU.
No software either, so until commercial packages support it who wants it?
[Is there PD Mac 8530-MIDI software for it?]

It probably WON'T work with just any ][, since it (apparently) uses the
8530 in the Mac and Apple //GS. [Yet another reason for wanting the
mythical Appletalk card for the ][ series.]

Isn't there a possible timing problem with using the 8530 for MIDI?

Computer Parts Galore is just about out of bare boards, particularly the
MIDI bare boards. 'Paul' there is the only person that knows there are any,
8:30am EDT seems to be the best time to get ahold of him. They also sell
the 6N135's phototransistor for $2.75; the usual places (JameCo, JDR, even
Pionerr) didn't carry it.

Does anyone have a number or address for the other reasonably-priced bare
board suppliers? (NuScope and Micro-Mate are the only two that I know of,
and I can't find their adds in Computer Shopper anymore. CPG isn't even
advertising Apple stuff anymore.)

I'm getting a small prototyping board, so an extender card won't be far off.

I'm also looking for an audio digizter for the // series. A serial-port
version would be best, but that's probably unlikely given the high bandwidth.
I can make better use of the D/A converter in my Apple-Cat modem if I had
that. Voice mail would be a good thing to have.

Thanks.
