[rec.music.synth] Homework before buying my first keyboard...

.......help!

I'm an old hand at "PC"s (anyone remember feeding BASIC paper tape to
ALTAIR 8080?) and trying to break into MIDI and synths. I've read this
newsgroup (and everything else I can lay my hands on) and I feel that
I _ALMOST_ know what is going on. :-)

So, I'm ready to take the big jump, but.....

WHERE THE H*LL DO I FIND SPECS ON ALL THE KEYBOARDS OUT THERE???

Oh, all the mags (and some USENET notes) pop up with "this is
32 note polyphonic @ 8 timbre. Great, but is the keyboard velocity
sensitve? After-touch? Does it even HAVE a keyboard? What ELSE does
it do? How many pretty lights does it have? And all that good stuff.

WHERE can I _FIND_ this info?? Do I listen to the net, find an owner for
each machine, and get a brain dump? And for THAT matter, where can I find
the "official" MIDI specs? I've heard of this animal and seen a few
synopses of it, but where is the original? (It's NOT just as good as a
XEROX (tm), in this case! :-) )

I'm SURE this has been hashed OVER and OVER, so everyone tell me to "shaddup
and go read such-and-such". I'll be GLAD to!! Thanks!

My employer uses COBOL as their primary language. (I'm so ashamed.....)

1)read Electronic Musician, edited by Craig Anderton.
2)got to your local dealer, and lean on the reps. they don't like to
hand you docs, but it's their job.
