For our software engineering project, we are writing a percussion instructor for the Macintosh. The hardware setup we have right now is a Macintosh II, a Passport MIDI interface, and a Yamaha DD-5. This is what is supposed to happen: student plays a drum rudiment on the drum machine, then Macintosh provides an evaluation of student performance. Accent level, consistency of tempo, and sticking (hitting the correct pad) will be parameters of evaluation. The Macintosh must play the rudiment at the desired tempo for the student. Is there some kind of software that will let us "see" and use the MIDI output from the DD-5? How do we produce drum sounds from the Macintosh? We have been told we should sample the drum sounds. Does anybody have a library of such samples? Any relevant information/help will be appreciated. send replies to drummers@cs.unc.edu or denelsbe@cs.unc.edu yong-mi kimy@cs.unc.edu
