[rec.music.synth] Laptops for MIDI?

I am about to sell my Sun 386i which will leave me without a platform from
which I can use my MusicQuest MPU (a MIDI port for those non-musician
comp.laptoppers) clone. I'm considering buying a used PC clone laptop and am
wondering whether there are any out there that will support an MPU. Has anyone
out there done this? Ideally, I'd like to buy an inexpensive laptop (like the
Toshiba 1000: $500 - $800) since it will not be my primary computer - I'll just
be using it for sequencing, flight planning and low intensity file editing. I
admit to not having researched the laptop market very thoroughly yet - I'm
hoping someone out there can help me narrow my search.

Does anyone other than Toshiba make 'external busses' for laptops so that I
could keep the MPU at home when I take laptop on trips? Preliminary pricing of
the Toshiba external bus is at almost $1K! That would be twice the going price
of the computer itself!

Is a 8086 or 8088 enough for running a good sequencer, or should I be looking
at 286 and 386 boxes?

Are there any 'gochas' associated with laptops that make running sequencers
impractical/impossible?
