[rec.music.synth] Pro's and con's of buying used synths

g-man@flowzone.EBay.Sun.COM (Luis Navarro) (02/26/91)

I am in the market for my second synth, most likely a rackmount, but
keyboards haven't been completely ruled out. And, of course, in the
process of shopping around, I have come across some great deals on used
equipment. Sure the prices are great, but is it really worth it?

Despite the fact that we're dealing with fairly rugged solid state
technology, a guy at a local music store tried to convince me that used
equipment is fairly risky as the synth may be experiencing that nasty
variety of problem that only manifests itself after the unit's warmed up
for over an hour, allowing me to get easily sucked into an essentially
broken unit.

So, the question to you netlanders is: does this (coming across questionable
used equipment) happen on a semi-regular basis or is this the once-in-a-
blue-moon type of event I previously believed?

Also, in a related question to those of you buying/selling equipment long
distance over this net: how can you buy equipment from private individuals
hundreds of miles away with any sort of security?

If it helps any, I have somewhat narrowed down my choice to one of the
following: U-220, D-110, or D-550. I have been offered a D-110 for $250 and
a U-220 for $500, both used. Are these seemingly good prices worth taking
the risk of buying used?

Thanks in advance for any advice/help....
