[rec.music.synth] FM synthesis using Motorolla 56001

dmarer@madvax.uop.edu (03/15/91)

Is there anybody out there who has designed systems using the Motorolla
56001 DSP? I am an undergraduate student working on a senior project, and I
understand the workings of the chip, but do not have a real in-depth description
of the technical stuff yet. (Documentation is slow in coming...) Do you have
any suggestions as to what would be the best source for this technical
information? (i.e. The part number of which spec sheets, some appl. notes,
etc.) Also, what pitfalls await me when I finally plug the thing in? Any
special details I should pay attention to? (Characteristics of the clock
signal, power up sequence, quirks and tricks?)

I'm designing a tone generation module (basically digital FM synthesis)
with some sharp new ideas. The entire thing is based on one fast DSP (the
56001) and some I/O - estimated cost is around $300 for something that (as far
as I can guesstimate) would cost 4-5 times store bought. It greatly reduces
the overhead as far as chips and PC boards go, and places the processing
burden on software instead of hardware like most FM synthesizers.

Another concern I have is the D/A conversion - I plan to to 16-bit
analog sound generation at 44.1[kHz] but can't find such a D/A. Does
anyone have any suggestions about companies that make such a monster? (Our
part catalogs are slightly antiquated.) Any helpful suggestions on getting
quality output besides just sample&hold -> D/A -> LPF -> output?  I've read
articles (John Watkinson, The Art of Digital Audio) on dither, but I'm not sure
if it would help or not. Any suggestions?

If you'd like to hear more, drop me a line at the address below. I
appreciate any input you might have! Thanx!
