[rec.arts.sf-lovers] Digitized anime characters

hiebeler@pawl23.pawl.rpi.edu (David E. Hiebeler) (01/25/88)

Recently here, I digitized a few characters from various pieces of
Japanese animation. Among the images are: 2 images of Lum, from Urusei
Yatsura; 2 pictures of Yuri, and 2 of Kei, from Dirty Pair; a woman from
Area88 (don't know her name); a couple of images of Nausicaa, from the
film by that name; and also a Calvin & Hobbes picture. There are more, but
I can't remember all of them at the moment.
These images currently exist in two formats: 1) The original
image-files, which are 65536 bytes (256x256 image, 1 byte per pixel).
They are grey-scale images; each pixel has a value from 0-255.
I have also converted some of these images to black&white SUN rasters.
I accomplished this by expanding each byte-pixel into a 2x2 block of bit-pixels,
and by turning on different numbers of the pixels in the 2x2 block, I simulated
5 levels of grey. This is a very simple method; if anyone has any better
methods of converting to black & white, I'm interested in hearing them. So
the SUN rasters are 512x512.
I wrote a simple SunView program which reads in the original digitized
file, and by means of a few sliders, lets you use this method of converting
the images to black & white rasters. It's a crude program, but it works.

Anyways, anyone interested in getting copies of these images, send
me a note. If there's sufficient interest, I'll set them up so internet folks
can get them through anonymous FTP.
Oh, and for those who haven't already found out, we also have some
rather nice icons here of lots of anime characters. (They are SUN icons,
64x64).
