[news.lists] Summary of Usenet Machine Types

jroberts@attvcr.UUCP (John Roberts) (08/03/88)

The following is a compilation of machine types on usenet. It uses maps
current as of April/May 1988, which were generously forwarded by Stuart
Lynne of van-bc. It took this long to produce a list partly because it
wasn't a high priority item, and also because of the EXTREME inconsistency
in creating the #S line. As a general plea, at least use the

	#S	manufacturer model; OS type

format described in the usenet documentation.

I had originally planned to compile the OS types, as well as the hardware,
but my lack of knowledge of the names used made it impossible. I could
not tell by looking whether a particular OS was a System V variant, BSD
variant, or both, and the version numbers drove me crazy.

To create a sorted list of manufacturers only, by descending total machines,
use the command:

	grep "^[A-Z]" main-file | sort +1n -r -t"<tab>"

I welcome any suggestions of corrections, and will try to incorporate them
into a future posting. Please redirect flames to alt.flame.

Some assumptions and arbitrary decisions:

1. All PC's, whenever I could identify them, were lumped together into
three categories: XT, AT, and 386. Some were doubtless missed, and
will most often appear in the "one of" list at the end.

2. Machines resold by another vendor (such as Unisys with the Arete and
NCR boxes, AT&T with the Convergent, etc.) are listed under the reseller.
This is because there are too many such arrangements of which I am not
aware, and it would not be fair to do it only partially.

3. Some consolidations may have been missed because I did not realize that
ABC stood for Abacus Computers (just an example, obviously).

4. Words in the name of a model have often been removed, except when
required for valid differentiation (such as VAXSTATION vs. MICROVAX).
Model numbers that seem like they should be consolidated have not
been unless I was sure of myself.

5. Where the system was described as a network, I simply gave credit for
two machines, unless a specific number was given. This will probably
make the results for companies like Sun and Apollo too low. On the
other hand, many sites have more than one machine connected, but only
a single usenet i.d. (my site included), so maybe I should just ignore
   networks.

6. The results are not intended to imply actual installed base or market
share. Usenet is more common among academic and research sites than
commercial ones, so some hardware (eg. NCR) will get lower numbers
than normal. Also, some areas have a habit of leaving the #S line
blank, possibly to reduce net load (unlikely) or to preserve secrecy.

7. Totals may not agree with individual model counts, as some entries
specified a manufacturer but no model information.

8. I have consolidated Sperry and Unisys, assigned all SM90's to Telmat,
and all otherwise unallocated SPSx's to Honeywell. Also, if anyone
knows what a DS90 is, please tell me. Some manufacturer names have
been left abbreviated because I did not know the expansion.
