I have my own version of this problem. I want to call another system to pick up our mail. They're long-distance, though, so I don't want to call any more often than necessary get the job done. Assume the other system is called "other". My machine keeps its work files in /usr/spool/uucp. I use this in crontab: 00 11 * * * touch /usr/spool/uucp/C.otherz0000 01,16,31,46 11,12 * * * /usr/lib/uucp/uucico -r1 The first line creates a bogus empty command file. This forces uucico to believe there is traffic for the other system. The second line forces uucp to call at fifteen minute intervals to each system with traffic waiting. Once it gets through to "other", uucp deletes the bogus command file, and doesn't call again. I have been using this method for 2 months. No problems so far. -- David S.
