The 'x' command in SC wipes out the current cell, but SC doesn't notice that the spreadsheet has changed, so if you exit with the 'q' command it will not offer to save the changed file. I found this out the hard way.

I found this out the hard way. Richard is right. The fix is to add a line like modflg++; in the case statement for 'x'. It's about line 1064 in version 5.2 of sc.c.
