<> We are looking to replace some DMF-32's with other boards that emulate same, but have modem control on all lines. In particular, we're concerned about DCD, since we're using a local area network to access our VAX, and a broken virtual circuit does not imply automatic log-out on ports without modem control. We have looked at two products: the Able VMZ/32N and the Emulex CS11/F. Does anyone have any experience with these boards, or know of any others that might be worth investigating? Thanks in advance for any help. Steve Kahn Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab (301) 953-7100 x7344

Both the Able VMZ32 and the Emulex CS[12]1/F work fine with the 4.2 dmf driver. I have seen some problems with 4.1, however, but they are not related to the emulators (i.e. they happen with DEC dmf's, too). Accord Computer in Irvine also makes a working dmf emulator. (Note that all of these emulators only emulate the asynchronous portion of the dmf, not the line printer, parallel, or synchronous portions. The Able VMZ/LP emulates just the line printer portion, but I have no experience with it, yet (but I've just received a demo board from Able that I'll try)). -- Ed Gould ucbvax!mtxinu!ed

From: Dave Johnson <dbj@rice.ARPA> We are looking to replace some DMF-32's with other boards that emulate same, but have modem control on all lines... I've used an OPTIMUX from ACCORD Computer and it seems to work. It seems essentially identical to the Able VMZ except that it does not require you to put the CSR at an even multiple 200 as the VMZ does. It does have modem control on all lines.
