[net.unix-wizards] 4.2's memory needs on a 750

phil@amd70.UUCP (Phil Ngai) (04/28/84)

I am putting together a 750 to run 4.2 BSD and was going to order only
2 Mb for it, as we typically only have about 3 or 4 people doing real work.

I am hearing that 4.2 has gotten so big (or something) that 2 Mb
isn't really enough, even for the small number of users I'll have.

I would appreciate input from people who have tried to run 4.2 with
only 2 Mb as to whether that's enough or I should really order more
and if so, how much more to support 4 active users (compiling, etc)?

Thanks,

A 750 works fine with 2Mbytes. We have one with that much memory which
is used for printer spooling, making systems (one a day, plus iron) and
other software development. The usage is usually 3-5 people during the
day and the load is fine. We have another 750 with 2Mbytes and an
average of 16 users, now *that* is a treat...

With our load average tending to run > 10 during the afternoon there was no
way our Vax 750 was going to survive under 4.2 with only 2 Mb. We got more
memory and are now running 6.5 Mb. We remember that period as a very miserable
time. I almost got lynched for bringing up 4.2. The disturbing thing was that
the system seemed to get quite noticably slow whenever the load average got
above 5.

I concur with Dave. We have 2MB on a 750 running 4.2bsd with 4-7 users. We
page very little, if at all. Note that this is mostly editing (ted, which
run 280K plus) and FORTRAN compiles. When some of the messy code starts
running, we start paging. That's why we run 4.2 instead of Vr2.
