[comp.mail.misc] How do I get to domain .ac?

steve@umnd-cs.UUCP (03/10/87)

I've been trying to send off a note to user@multics.bham.uk.ac, but
none of supermailers* I've tried knows about them.

Can someone please help me out?

The domain is `uk', multics.bham.ac.uk: AC for Academic Community,
and UK for yoU-Know-what.

The address you have is incorrect. It should be "user@multics.bham.ac.uk"!
This should make sense to any smart mailer. What has probably happened is
either a mailer (or news system?) has munged the header or the user who
gave you the address got confused. Y'see, in the UK, the domain ordering
is the other way round - ie multics.bham.ac.uk becomes uk.ac.bham.multics!

Aren't standards wonderful?

JANET:	jim@uk.ac.strath.cs

"JANET domain ordering is swapped around so's there'd be some use for rev(1)!"

1. The address should be user@multics.bham.ac.uk note the transposition of the
    last two domains.

2. This appears to be a JANET host not an APRA host; therefore the route is:
     user%multics.bham.ac.uk@cs.ucl.ac.uk
and likewise for all JANET hosts from ARPA.

3. See the article in CACM Oct 86 Vol 29 No. 10 "Notable Computer Networks"
where JANET and its domains and gateways are listed.

3. See signature for other routes.

Not quite. UCL have taken the trouble to register all NRS registered JANET/PSS
hosts in the ARPANET tables as MX records (the equivalent of application relays
in the NRS) pointing to cs.ucl.ac.uk. Thus, all NRS registered hosts should
appear as if they are directly connected to the ARPANET! Although, at the end
of the day, the route is still through UCL, this should be transparent to the
user.

Effectively, "uk" is an ARPANET domain.

Are you sure its "user\@multics.bham.uk.ac"?
Try "user@multics.bham.ac.uk".

Is this a recent event? My posting was based on trying to mail the UK from
MILNET sometime towards the end of last year (in some earlier incarnation of
myself). I too tried using smart mailers and interrogating network databases
to no avail. Using ucl-cs was a shot in the dark which worked! I must assume
that either this is a recent feature, or the host name records have not
reached MILNET.
 Can anyone clarify? Brian.

You'll need to ask Steve Kille <steve@cs.ucl.ac.uk> when he did it.

Some ARPANET sites have broken software not capable of interpreting MX records.
(Just as many UK sites cannot interpret application relays.) I assume some
(all) MILNET sites have broken software too ...
